Protect Your Water with AQS

The Water Services (Amendment) Act 2012 introduces a new registration and inspecition system for septic tanks and other domestic waste water treatment systems in Ireland.  From June 2012, owners of domestic waste water treatment systems are required to register their systems with thier water services authority, (local authority).  A once-off registration fee will apply -  a reduced fee of €5.00 can be paid until 28th September 2012.  It will then increase to €50.00.

Here is what you need to know:

  • Domestic waste water treatment system owners are required to register their systems by 1st February 2013.
  • You can register online at www.ProtectOurWater.ie, through your local authourity office or by calling Lo Call 1890 800 800.
  • If you do not register your system you will be committing an offence.  (It will be more likely that an inspection will take place if you are not registered).
  • If a system is found to be defective an advisory notice requiring that the problem is remedied will be issued by the water services authority.
  • You can tell there is a problem with your system if there are foul odours, excessive amounts of vegetations in your percolation area or the area around your system is soggy and waterlogged.
  • Owners must ensure that spetic tank cleaning and desludging is carried out by permitted waste collection contractors only, such as AQS.
  • Options to provide financial support to household systems requiring upgrade or remediation, following inspection in 2013, will be kept under review.
